NEW REGULATIONS TRANSFORM THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM IN CANADA

Canada has introduced sweeping changes to its International Student Program (ISP), set to take effect in November 2024, aimed at strengthening oversight and improving integrity within the study permit system.

Under the revised regulations announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the updates impose stricter requirements for both international students and Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs):

🔹 Letter of Acceptance (LOA) Verification
All LOAs submitted for study permit applications must now be verified directly with the issuing DLI to confirm authenticity before approval.

🔹 Mandatory Continuous Enrollment
International students must maintain active enrollment at their designated institution. Failure to do so may lead to the invalidation of their study permit, potentially impacting their legal status in Canada.

🔹 Institutional Accountability Measures
DLIs will be held to enhanced operational standards. Institutions that fail to meet compliance requirements risk being suspended from hosting international students, which could significantly impact their international recruitment.

What This Means

These reforms aim to reduce fraud, improve student protections, and ensure DLIs remain accountable. Prospective and current international students must now exercise greater care in selecting institutions and managing their enrollment status.
