What is a study permit?

The study permit is a document issued by the government that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada, not all schools have it, make sure you are getting the right advice to go to the right school. Also, there might be schools that do have a DLI but they are notapproved programs for Post-Graduate Work Permits.

Make sure you are well informed, especially if you are planning to stay in Canada and get your permanent residence. Although there is no age limit or it might seem like the type and duration of your program does not matter, truth is it does!. It is very important to consider your options depending on your age and if you are single or coming with your family, you want to make sure that whatever you are choosing to study will reflect in a posItive way towards your immigration profile if what you are looking for is opening opportunities to stay in Canada as a Permanent Resident.

If you are planning on studying a short-term program for 6 months or less, you do not need a study permit. You can do this with your Tourist Visa. This is usually the case for those coming for Language Studies.

Now if you are planning to study a program which will exceed the 6 month period you will need a study permit.

It is always better to try to apply for a study permit if you think you might want to study another program eventually to avoid any inconvenience.

Keep in mind that to apply for a study permit you must be accepted by a Designated Learning Institution and provide proof that you have the financial funds required to cover tuition fees, expenses for you and your family.
