CANADA ENDED THE POLICY ALLOWING VISITORS TO APPLY FOR WORK PERMITS
On September 9, 2024, Canada officially announced the termination of a public policy that had allowed certain visitors to apply for employer-specific work permits from within the country. This policy, which came into effect on August 24, 2020, and ended on August 28, 2024, was initially introduced as a temporary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic. It played a key role in addressing labor shortages and supporting economic recovery by allowing eligible visitors to apply for work permits without having to leave Canada.
The policy had three main objectives. First, it permitted visitors with job offers to apply for work permits from within Canada, rather than being required to apply from abroad. Second, it exempted them from certain compliance requirements related to temporary residence. Third, it allowed former temporary workers who met the criteria to continue working while their work permit applications were being processed.
Over the course of the policy, many visitors took advantage of this unique opportunity, providing much-needed support to Canadian employers and contributing to the country’s economic recovery during the pandemic. However, with the gradual return to normalcy and the recalibration of immigration policies, the termination of this policy marks a significant shift in Canada's approach to managing its temporary foreign workforce and visitor work permits.
As of now, visitors to Canada who wish to obtain a work permit will need to revert to standard procedures, which require submitting applications from outside of Canada. This policy change is expected to have an impact on both employers and foreign nationals seeking work opportunities within the country.
