QUEBEC AND NEW BRUNSWICK CANCEL CONTRACTS WITH CBSA TO DETAIN IMMIGRANTS IN PROVINCIAL JAILS

Quebec and New Brunswick have joined five other Canadian provinces in cancelling their contracts with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to hold immigrants in provincial jails. This is great news for migrant rights and civil liberties activists. Canada’s Francophone province, Quebec, will stop imprisoning immigration detainees in the provincial jails by late 2023, while New Brunswick will terminate its agreement with the CBSA on February 28, 2024. Saskatchewan’s contract with the CBSA will expire by September 2023, and Manitoba’s contract will end next year. By then, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Alberta will have already finished immigration detention.
