OTTAWA PUBLISHED REVISED WORK PERMIT GUIDELINES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS' SPOUSES

As of January 21, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has implemented new eligibility criteria for open work permits (OWPs) issued to spouses of international students. This update introduces more targeted regulations to align with Canada's evolving immigration and workforce priorities.

Under the revised rules, work permit eligibility is now limited to spouses of students enrolled in:

  • Doctorate programs

  • Specific eligible programs

  • Professional programs

  • Master’s programs lasting 16 months or longer

For current OWP holders, there is an opportunity to renew permits under previous criteria, provided their spouse’s study program still meets the conditions established at the time of issuance.

In addition, the revised guidelines expand the list of eligible study programs while also removing the ORG ID requirement for applicants under the Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot, making it easier for Francophone spouses to apply.

This shift reflects Canada’s strategic approach to balancing the demand for international talent and supporting specific study programs that address key national priorities, such as healthcare, education, and STEM fields.
