NEW EDUCATION CATEGORY FOR EXPRESS ENTRY: OPPORTUNITIES FOR SKILLED EDUCATORS

Canada has introduced a new Education category within the Express Entry system to attract skilled professionals in the education sector. This initiative, launched by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as of February 27, 2025, aims to address labor shortages and support the country’s growing need for educators.

Eligibility Criteria for the Education Category

To qualify under the new Education category, candidates must:

  • Meet Express Entry Requirements: Be eligible under one of the three main immigration programs managed by Express Entry:

    • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)

    • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

    • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)

  • Have Relevant Work Experience: Candidates must have at least six months of continuous, full-time work experience (or an equivalent amount of part-time experience) in one of the designated education occupations within the past three years. Experience can be gained in Canada or abroad.

Occupations in Demand

The following occupations have been identified as in demand under the Education category:

  • Elementary and Secondary School Teacher Assistants (NOC 43100, TEER 3): Assist teachers in supporting students’ learning and development.

  • Instructors of Persons with Disabilities (NOC 42203, TEER 2): Provide instruction and support to individuals with disabilities to enhance their skills and independence.

  • Early Childhood Educators and Assistants (NOC 42202, TEER 2): Plan and organize activities for preschool-aged children to promote their intellectual, physical, and emotional growth.

  • Elementary School and Kindergarten Teachers (NOC 41221, TEER 1): Teach basic subjects at the elementary level, including kindergarten, to facilitate children's development.

  • Secondary School Teachers (NOC 41220, TEER 1): Educate students at the secondary level in various subjects, preparing them for post-secondary education or the workforce.

Why This Matters for Immigration Applicants

The introduction of the Education category within Express Entry provides a streamlined pathway for skilled educators seeking to build their careers in Canada. With a growing demand for education professionals, this category-based selection allows qualified candidates to receive targeted invitations to apply for permanent residency.
