Canada’s population

According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s population now stands at 38 million people. New migrants and non-permanent residents accounted for 80 percent of the population increase. Most of the new arrivals are moving to big cities, such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

International Students

Looking at the growth of Canada’s overall population, international students account for a large proportion of the newcomer population. Last year, about 11,000 newcomers were international students. Canadian cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver have even experienced a surge in newcomer settlement and negative growth in the local population.

New immigrants

Canada is still accepting new immigrants during the pandemic because, without new immigrants, Canada's population will only decrease. It is undeniable that the number of new immigrants and international students has decreased due to the pandemic. However, recent data released by Statistics Canada still shows surprising results. Canada’s population growth in the first quarter of 2020 was the lowest in five years, with 80 percent of the population growth coming from new immigrants. Statistics show that in the first three months of 2020, Canada’s population increased by 76,221, a total increase of 0.2 percent.
