CANADA STRENGTHENS PROTECTION FOR TEMPORARY FOREIGN WORKERS

The Government of Canada has implemented significant measures to enhance protections for temporary foreign workers by introducing stricter penalties for employers violating regulations under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

Key changes include:

  • Increased fines: The maximum fine per violation has tripled to $45,000, up from $15,000.

  • Extended program bans: Employers can now face bans of up to five years.

  • Per-worker penalties: Violations affecting multiple workers will incur fines of $15,000 per worker.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of temporary workers and ensuring program compliance. Between April and September 2024, authorities conducted 649 inspections, issuing $2.1 million in fines and enforcing 20 employer bans.

The updated penalties aim to deter employer misconduct, promote worker safety, and maintain the integrity of the TFWP.
