CANADA PUBLISHED THE LIST OF PGWP-ELIGIBLE COLLEGE PROGRAMS

Canadian immigration officials have released a newly updated list of college programs eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which will come into effect on November 1, 2024. This change restricts eligibility to graduates from specific fields such as agriculture, healthcare, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), skilled trades, and transportation.

This policy shift will have a significant impact on international students, particularly those pursuing degrees in previously popular areas such as tourism, hospitality, and business, as these programs are no longer eligible for the PGWP. The exclusion of these fields has raised concerns about the future career prospects of international graduates in these sectors.

In addition to program restrictions, new language proficiency requirements will also take effect on November 1, 2024. University graduates will now be required to demonstrate a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 7, while college graduates must show a CLB score of 5. These new requirements are intended to ensure that graduates meet language standards necessary for entering the Canadian workforce.

However, this decision has sparked concern among educational institutions and industry leaders. They argue that limiting PGWP eligibility may not effectively address the regional labour market needs across Canada. Many fear that these changes could potentially harm local economies that rely on international graduates, especially in sectors like hospitality and business, which are critical in certain regions.

As these new rules take shape, it’s crucial for prospective students and recent graduates to remain informed and consider how these updates could affect their post-graduation plans.
