OTTAWA IS CONSIDERING INCREASING OFF-CAMPUS WORK HOURS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The Canadian government is considering a proposal that could have a significant impact on international students studying in the country. Ottawa is reviewing a request to increase the allowable number of off-campus work hours for international students from the current limit of 20 hours per week. This proposal, which was first suggested last November, has recently undergone a 30-day review process by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The proposed change comes after the temporary allowance during the COVID-19 pandemic, which permitted international students to work up to 24 hours per week off-campus. This measure was implemented to help students manage the financial challenges brought on by the pandemic. However, in April, the IRCC reverted to the pre-pandemic rule of a maximum of 20 hours per week, aiming to prioritize students' academic commitments.

The current review is motivated by a desire to strike a balance between enabling students to earn additional income and ensuring that their academic performance remains uncompromised. An increase in the permitted work hours could provide much-needed financial relief for international students, many of whom rely on part-time jobs to support their studies and living expenses. Additionally, it could help address labour shortages in various low-wage industries across Canada, where employers often struggle to find sufficient staff.

If the proposal is approved, nearly 297,000 international students currently enrolled in Canadian institutions could benefit from the increased work hours. This change would not only provide more flexibility for students but also potentially enhance their overall Canadian experience by allowing them to gain more work experience and integrate further into the local economy.
