SPONSORSHIP FOR DEPENDENT CHILDREN
The following requirements apply if you want to sponsor your dependent children or those of your spouse or common-law.
The Sponsored Person must be either:
The biological child of the parent if the child has not been adopted by a person other than the spouse or common-law partner; or adopted child of the parent.
In order to sponsor a dependent child, he or she must meet the eligibility requirements such as:
Age: The dependent child must be less than 19 years of age and not a spouse or common-law partner; or
Has been an ongoing full-time student since before the age of 19 and has depended substantially on the financial support of the parent since that time; or
Is 19 years of age or older and meets the following:
Became a spouse or partner before the age of 19;
Has depended substantially on the financial support of the parent since they became a spouse or partner; or
Is 19 years of age or older and has depended substantially on the financial support of the parent since before the age of 19 and is unable to be financially self-supporting due to a physical or mental condition.
Income requirement
Keep in mind that in most cases, there isn’t an income requirement to sponsor your spouse or partner or dependent child. You only need to show that you have enough money to meet the income requirements if:
you’re sponsoring a dependent child that has 1 or more dependent children of their own, or
you’re sponsoring a spouse or partner that has a dependent child, and their dependent child has 1 or more children of their own.
