OTTAWA SET NEW OFF-CAMPUS WORK HOUR RULES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Ottawa has announced new off-campus work hour rules for international students, set to take effect this fall. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed that the temporary policy allowing students to work over 20 hours off campus weekly will end on April 30, 2024, without extension. Moving forward, students will be able to work up to 24 hours off campus weekly, providing them with more flexibility to balance work and study commitments effectively.

The decision to revise the off-campus work hour rules was made to ensure that students prioritize their academic studies while still having the opportunity to work as needed. Additionally, during academic breaks, students will have the flexibility to work unlimited hours, offering them more opportunities to gain practical experience and support themselves financially.

This change reflects the Canadian government's commitment to supporting international students in achieving their academic goals while also gaining valuable work experience. By aligning with the policies of other countries and considering research on academic outcomes, these new rules aim to strike a balance that benefits both students and the Canadian economy.
