OTTAWA EXTENDED THE PILOT PROGRAM, ALLOWING MORE FAMILIES TO REUNION

On May 31, 2019, the Canadian government launched a pilot project aimed at facilitating family reunification. The project focused on evaluating and potentially amending the regulations governing family class and spouse or common-law partner permanent residence applicants. Its primary goal was to exempt certain applicants from paragraph R117(9)(d) or R125(1)(d) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR).

This pilot project was initially set to run for a limited period, but its significance became evident as it addressed a crucial issue in the immigration process. As a result, it was extended to September 10, 2023, to allow for further analysis and potential changes.

On October 30, 2023, the Government of Canada made an important decision to extend the pilot program. This extension signifies the government's commitment to improving and simplifying the immigration process for families. The specific regulations mentioned (R117(9)(d) and R125(1)(d) are significant because they pertain to the inadmissibility of some family members, such as dependent children, based on previous declarations and immigration history.

By exempting certain family class and spouse or common-law partner permanent residence applicants from these regulations, the Canadian government is taking a step forward in facilitating family reunification. This extension offers hope to many families who were previously affected by these regulations, making it easier for them to sponsor non-accompanying family members.
