ALBERTA EXTENDS WORK PERMITS FOR SELECT NOMINEES AMIDST IMMIGRATION POLICY SHIFT
On August 26, 2024, the Alberta Government introduced a significant temporary measure designed to support select immigration applicants facing the expiration of their work permits. This new policy allows eligible nominees under the Alberta Opportunity Stream and Rural Renewal Stream to receive up to 2-year open work permits from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This measure is particularly aimed at applicants who are either awaiting a decision on their application or have recently been declined due solely to the expiration of their work permits in 2024.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) will take a proactive approach in assessing the eligibility of these candidates. To qualify for this extended work permit support, applicants must meet the specific requirements of their respective streams and hold valid job offers. This temporary policy not only seeks to maintain the nomination eligibility of affected candidates but also allows the AAIP to better manage and prioritize other pending applications throughout the year.
This initiative reflects Alberta’s commitment to retaining skilled workers and ensuring that qualified candidates can continue to contribute to the province's economy while their immigration status is being finalized.
